JULY 2018

    • As per report of International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications, 2018, India ranks 5th in global cultivation of GM crops
    • Bt. cotton is the only GM crop approved for commercial cultivation in the Country
    • Total area under GM crops in India –> 110.75 Lakh hectare
    • A  Soil Health Card contains the status of soils with respect to 12 parameters, namely – N, P, K (Macro-nutrients), S (Secondary-nutrients), Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn, B (Micro-nutrients) and pH, EC, OC (Physical Parameters)
    • Under MIDH, a cluster-based approach is adopted for production and linking it with available infrastructure, or to be created, for post harvest management, processing, marketing and export
    • Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Cotton for 2018-19 season at Rs. 5150/- per quintal for medium staple and at Rs. 5450/- per quintal for long staple
    • Government has been promoting Farmers Producers Organisations (FPOs) and the Budget for 2018-19 has given 100% deduction of income tax to such organisations having annual turnover up to Rs. 100 crore in respect of profits derived from post-harvest value addition in agriculture
    • Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) is done in case of perishable crops like potato and onion recommended  by State/UT to protect farmers to not go for  distress sales in case of bumper harvest
    • PMFBY is an actuarial premium based scheme under which farmer has to pay maximum premium of 2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi, food & oilseed crops and 5% for annual commercial/horticultural crops and remaining part of the actuarial/bidded premium is
    • NITI AAYOG has formulated Model Agricultural Land Leasing Act, 2016 to provide a legal and institutional framework for legalisation of agricultural land leasing.
    • Government has allocated Rs. 2600 crore for the year 2018-19 under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY)- Har Khet Ko Pani (HKKP) component.
    • This budget is for 1.Debt servicing on the loan availed from NABARD under Long term Irrigation Fund (LTIF) to fund prioritized projects under PMKSY- Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP). 2.Financial assistance to States/UTs under the scheme Surface Minor Irrigation and Repair, Renovation & Restoration (RRR).
    • To meet per-capita availability of Milk in Meghalaya –> Meghalaya Milk Mission was launched  in Shillong by Union Minister Radha Mohan SIngh with an  outlay of Rs 215 crores through National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC)
    • Since market rate of gram has reached around MSP levels Government has directed NAFED to start disposal of gram stock, the disposal from godowns will be on FIFO basis (First In – First Out basis) so as to maintain quality of stored commodities
    • Under MIDH subsidy is provided to farm land less than 4 hectares in majority of its interventions(small and marginal farmers)
    • Under National Food Security Mission (NFSM), at least 33% of funds are earmarked for small and marginal farmers.
    • Under the Per Drop More Crop (micro irrigation) at least 50% of the allocation is to be utilized for small & marginal farmers.
    • The Government currently provides total interest subvention up to 5% ( inclusive of 3 % prompt repayment incentive) on short-term crop loans up to Rs.3.00 lakh.
    • Thus, loan is available to farmers at a reduced rate of 4% per annum on prompt repayment
    • The Government has formulated and released a progressive and facilitative Model Act on Contract farming  “The State/ UT Agricultural Produce & Livestock Contract Farming and Services (Promotion & Facilitation) Act, 2018”  in May 2018
    • PMFBY was introduced in -> Kharif of 2016 currently implemented in 27 states
    • A total of 300 crore was set aside in the Union budget for -> Restructured National Bamboo Mission under NMSA in 2018-19
    • Funds under Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) scheme of DAC&FW are also provided to State Governments for conducting training and demonstrations of various agricultural machinery
    • Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) comes under the main Mission i.e. National Mission on Agricultural Extension and Technology (NMAET)
    • To examine issues and strategies relating to doubling of farmers’ income in real terms by the year 2022 Inter-Ministerial Committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Executive Officer (CEO), National Rainfed Area Authority,–> Ashok Dalwai Committee

  •  Krishi kalyan Abhiyaan was started from 1st June, 2018 till 31st July, 2018 so as to aid, assist and advice farmers on how to improve their farming techniques and raise their incomes.It is to be undertaken in 25 Villages with more than 1000 population each in Aspirational Districts identified in consultation with Ministry of Rural Development as per directions of NITI Ayog
